May 3 Omaha Science Café to explore health disparities

Athena Ramos of UNMC College of Public Health will present

Health disparities are the topic of the next Omaha Science Café on May 3 at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14th St.

Athena Ramos, a program coordinator with the Center for Reducing Health Disparities in the UNMC Harold M. and Beverly Maurer Center for Public Health, will speak from 7 to 8 p.m. Her presentation is titled "Health Disparities: What do WE have to do with it?"

“We, as a community, have the ability to influence the outcomes and decrease, even eliminate health disparities,” Ramos said.

Health disparities (also called health care inequality in some countries) refer to gaps in the quality of health and health care across gender, racial, ethnic, sexual orientation, geographic location, and socioeconomic groups.

Ramos received a master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) in 2009, a master’s degree (MS) in 2004 in Urban Studies, and her bachelor’s degree (BS) in 2002 in Public Administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.  She also received her national certification as a public manager (CPM) in 2008.

She serves as the president of the Heartland Latino Leadership Conference, vice-chair of the city of Omaha Parks & Recreation advisory board and co-chair of the UNMC Employee Diversity Network. She serves on the board of directors for the Nebraska Minority Public Health Association, Nebraska Kidney Association, Justice for Our Neighbors, and United Way of Midlands Heartland Blueprint.
