Describe your research in laymen’s terms.
Our research program is aimed at in translating discoveries from the lab to the clinics. We have identified novel antigens, which are associated with the diagnosis, progression, metastasis and drug resistance of pancreatic cancer.
How does your research contribute to science and/or health care?
We have identified biomarkers that are being tested for early diagnosis and prognosis of cancers. In addition, tumor-specific targets are being tested for targeted therapy using small molecule inhibitors and antibodies.
Name someone at UNMC who provides vital contributions to your success and briefly describe how they help you.
Dr. Michael (Tony) Hollingsworth has played a vital role in my success at UNMC. Tony and I were trained by same mentor, the late Dr. Richard Metzgar, at Duke University Medical Center. Upon joining UNMC, Dr. Hollingsworth provided strong moral support during times of difficulty. He is a close friend, strong collaborator, and most importantly a supportive mentor to me. I also could not have had the success that I have had today without the strong support from my laboratory and BMB office staff. … Finally, my success is all possible due to the love from my wife (Sunita), and my kids (Rishi and Rahul) who have been there for me through success and failure.
List three things few people know about you.
- I love Bollywood movies and Indian music.
- I love watching Husker sports with my kids.
- I like playing traditional Indian musical instruments (even though my talent definitely does not involve music).
Dr. Batra continues to be a very dedicated supportive research person on behalf of pancreatic cancer. Both he and Dr. Hollingsworth are "non-stop" in their search for answers for early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. My father passed in October of 2004 from this cancer and both Dr. Batra and Dr. Hollingsworth continue to push the envelope in what is offered at UNMC for early diagnosis and treatment.
Congratulations Dr. Batra!!
