Free admission, screenings and massages will highlight event
The public is invited to attend a free health fair for older adults from noon to 4 p.m., Sunday, at the Home Instead Center for Successful Aging, 730 S. 38th Ave.
The event – “Spring into Wellness Health Fair for Older Adults” – is sponsored by the Interprofessional Aging Interest Group students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
There is no admission charge. Free massages will be available, and free health screenings will be offered for falls, gait and balance, osteoporosis, hearing, vision, blood pressure and blood sugar.
In addition, students will provide nutritional counseling and answer questions pertaining to medications.
“We’re hoping for a large turnout,” said Jackie Whittington, clinical research associate for UNMC’s geriatrics division. “It will be the first opportunity for many people to see our new building, so we’re excited to show it off. We think there should be something for everyone.”
The Home Instead Center for Successful Aging, which opened last year, represents a new model of care for Omaha and the region. It encompasses the expertise of care providers from across the spectrum including geriatric medicine, geriatric psychiatry, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, exercise science, and whole person wellness.
Informational handouts will be provided by several organizations including the Alzheimer’s Association, AARP, Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging, Home Instead Senior Care, Home Access Services, Mobilis Home Medical Equipment, Olson Center for Women’s Health, and the Weigel Williamson Center for Visual Rehabilitation.
Other highlights include food samples from Hy-Vee and Trader Joe’s and Wii Fit demonstrations.
