Starting Friday morning through May 1, those driving to the University of Nebraska Medical Center campus should try to avoid accessing the campus at 42nd and Emile streets. Metropolitan Utilities District will be repairing a broken water main on Emile Street near the intersection at 42nd Street.
Visitors, especially those going to the Durham Outpatient Center, and University Tower and Lied Transplant Center at the Nebraska Medical Center, should consider using Saddle Creek Road on the west edge of campus for access.
Though Emile Street will remain open, the construction will prevent drivers heading east on Emile Street from making left turns to drive north on 42nd Street. Two lanes headed east and west on Emile Street will be open for traffic during the construction period, but drivers are encouraged to use this thoroughfare sparingly.
"It will be safer for everyone if drivers simply avoid this area and find other ways to travel through campus while construction is underway," said Nick Combs, director of maintenance, utilities and renovations in UNMC Facilities Management and Planning. "MUD will have a lot of workers in this area and the less traffic we have, the safer they will be."
