UNMC Grants — Fu Chen wins prestigious dental awards

A drug delivery system that, in the form of a mouthwash, fights cavities, periodontal disease and bad breath received attention from the international dental community this month.

Fu Chen, a graduate student in the College of Pharmacy, received two prestigious awards for $2,000 each from the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) at the March 16 international conference in San Diego.

The IADR is a non-profit organization with more than 11,000 members worldwide. The awards were:

IADR/Lion Dental Research Award for junior investigators in recognition of outstanding and innovative research in basic dental science for the improvement of public dental health; and
IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Award to support students and young investigators doing research in the area of oral disease prevention.

Industry attention

Through UNeMed, UNMC’s technology transfer arm, a spin-off company has licensed the dental technology and has generated significant interest among oral hygiene manufactures to develop it into mouthwash products.

Chen works with Dong Wang, Ph.D., associate professor of pharmaceutical science, and has helped to develop a tooth-binding micelle drug delivery platform technology.

These micelles swiftly bind to teeth and gradually release their contents (e.g. antimicrobial, fragrant) for effective prevention and treatment of dental caries, peridontitis or halitosis.

Congratulations on this research. Preventing peridontitis and cavities can help individuals care better for their teeth and prevent loss. Great work!!
