The emerging epidemic of head and neck cancer will be the topic of the next Science Cafe in Lincoln on Thursday, Jan. 27, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at red9, 9th and M streets. The speaker will be Robert Lindau, M.D., whose talk will be titled, “Head and Neck Cancer Is Not Just For Smokers Anymore.” The event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Lindau is completing a head and neck surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Next year he will go to Portland, Ore., to train in microvascular surgery.
His talk will cover how human papillomavirus (HPV)is contributing to the increase of head and neck cancer. He also will detail vaccine prevention, treatment options including radiation, chemotherapy and surgical therapy and the role of sexual transmission.
Head and neck cancers account for about 3 to 5 percent of all cancers in the United States and are more common in men and in people over age 50.
Dr. Lindau served in the U.S. Navy for six years. He graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee, with a bachelor of science degree and earned his doctor in medicine from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed five years of general surgery residency at Creighton University Medical Center.
Science Cafe is a free educational event sponsored by UNMC and other groups to increase the population’s science literacy. Hosted by UNMC, BioNebraska and the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures, Lincoln Science Cafe is held on Thursdays every other month.
