Below is a list of achievements, activities and happenings involving UNMC staff, faculty and students.

Howard Gendelman, M.D., professor and chairman of the department of pharmacology and experimental neuroscience, was one of the featured speakers at the recent 2nd World Parkinson Congress in Glasgow, Scotland. The conference featured 190 speakers from 23 countries. Dr. Gendelman’s research team works on a possible vaccine for Parkinson’s disease.

Also, Dr. Gendelman and Susan Swindells, M.B.B.S., professor of internal medicine in the section of infectious diseases and medical director of the UNMC Specialty Care Clinic, were two of the featured presenters at the 2nd Annual Conference of the American Society for Nanomedicine earlier this month in Potomac, Md. They talked about emerging technologies in the HIV/AIDS field.

UNMC graduate student Nicole Haverland will compete for the Miss Nebraska crown this weekend. Her platform is increasing science education in schools.

William Lawlor, director of financial compliance and cost analysis, served as moderator of a panel discussion at the National Conference on College Cost Accounting in Atlanta on Oct. 6-8. The discussion centered on the impact of recent changes regarding Facilities and Administration proposals and negotiations. Professionals from more than 80 major universities attended the annual conference.

Nicole (Nicky) Haverland, a graduate student in the department of pharmacology and experimental neuroscience, or “Miss Douglas County” as she is known in the pageant world, will compete for the title of Miss Nebraska this weekend at the Rocco Theatre in Lincoln. Haverland’s platform is “Grab Life by the Protons – Encouraging Science in our schools.”

The Third International Conference on Gram-Positive Pathogens was held in Omaha last week. More than 200 scientists from around the world attended the seminar, which was hosted by UNMC, to discuss the latest developments in the fight against staph, strep and other deadly bacteria.

Shirley Schoening Scheuler, education coordinator in the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska, recently attended a symposium titled “Practical Strategies to Address the Behavioral Health Needs of Children and Families in Rural America” in Glendale, Ariz. The symposium focused on sustainable, practical strategies and evidence-based practices to address the behavioral health crisis that affects children, adults and families in rural America.
