Below is a list of achievements, activities and happenings involving UNMC staff, faculty and students.

Ebaldo Silva-Lopez, M.D., associate professor, surgical oncology, was recognized recently by the Association of periOperative Nurses of the Omaha Area for his ongoing contribution toward the education of operating room nurses.

Ari Nowacek, an M.D./Ph.D. candidate in medical sciences, and Laura Simone, a Ph.D. candidate in cancer research, have been named 2010-2011 Presidential Graduate Fellowship recipients by University of Nebraska President James B. Milliken, J.D.

Jeffrey Baldwin, Pharm.D., professor of pharmacy practice, recently rappelled down the Woodman Tower as part of a fundraiser for Boys Scouts of America. The descent from the roof of the Woodmen Tower was about 475 feet.

Robert Wigton, M.D., associate dean for graduate medical education, will make a presentation at 2 p.m., Oct. 10, on Nebraska’s pioneer women physicians. The presentation, which is being sponsored by the Douglas County Historical Society (DCHS), will be held at the General Crook House Museum, 30th and Fort streets. The event is open to the public. Admission is free for members of the DCHS and $5 for nonmembers.

Cory Shaw, CEO of UNMC Physicians, will be one of the keynote speakers at a Healthcare Reform Conference for Businesses at 8 a.m. on Oct. 12. at the Scott Conference Center, 6450 Pine St. See more about the conference online.

The Nebraska Regional Cystic Fibrosis Center — which is composed of both the pediatric and adult CF programs — has been awarded the 2010 Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Quality Care Award. To receive the award, the center had demonstrate sustained quality improvement work that improved outcomes.
