Campus resources to deal with substance abuse problems

Employees have many resources available to them to help deal with substance abuse problems.
September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.

Below, Marlene Schneider, a licensed alcohol and drug counselor with the Faculty Employee Assistance Program (FEAP), offers information about campus resources available to those on campus who feel they may have substance abuse problems.

Is there someone on campus I can contact should I feel I have a problem with drugs and/or alcohol?

Employees are encouraged to contact myself at 559-5175 or Susan Smith at 559-5323 in the Faculty Employee Assistance Program (FEAP) if they feel they may have problems with drugs or alcohol. Meetings and discussions with us are completely confidential, which means it is safe for employees to discuss their problems openly with us.

What are some of the resources employees have to help them recover from addictions and alcoholism?

FEAP offers a seven-week relapse prevention program and a wealth of educational materials regarding substance abuse. There also are two Alcoholics Anonymous meetings on campus each week — on Wednesdays and Fridays at noon in the Pastoral Care office in Clarkson Tower.

If I supervise someone who I believe has a substance-abuse problem, what should I do to help this person?

I would suggest the following steps in order:

  • Document specific work performance or behaviors;
  • Confront the employee regarding his/her performance or behaviors;
  • Refer employee to FEAP; and
  • Consult with the FEAP staff if you have any questions.
