Welcome to Personal Safety Awareness Week

Maybe we don’t like to think about it, but significant threats face those of us who work at medical centers.

Last month’s liquid oxygen leak on campus and last week’s shooting of a surgeon at Johns Hopkins Medical Center illustrate this fact.

Tomorrow — e2 Campus Read UNMC Today on Tuesday to learn about and register for the e2 Campus Security system, which can send messages to employees and students via text message, voicemail and e-mail should threatening situation such as an active shooter or tornado occur on campus.

“Such incidences illustrate how important it is to give UNMC employees and students all the resources and help they need to protect themselves,” said John Hauser. UNMC safety manager

To this end, UNMC officials have deemed Sept. 19-25 as Personal Safety Awareness Week.

UNMC Today will feature stories each day this week designed to help you learn to protect yourselves in a variety of situations.

Stories will focus on topics such as:

• The medical center’s new active shooter policy;
  
• The various methods UNMC uses to inform employees and students about threatening situations; and
  
• Steps people can take to prepare themselves for major disasters and emergencies such as pandemic and tornadoes.
