The University of Nebraska Foundation’s board of directors awarded more than $1 million to the university through its annual grants program to support projects and initiatives on all four campuses.
The following UNMC projects received funding from these awards:
- $150,214 for new equipment that enables research scientists to better analyze the composition of proteins. More than 14 biomedical researchers will use the equipment, which uses Nobel Prize winning technology, as they study prominent health issues, including pancreatic cancer, HIV infection, heart disease, drug delivery and more.
- $62,605 for devices that will enable UNMC physicians to monitor the physical activity of cardiac rehabilitation patients living in rural areas of Nebraska. The heart patient will wear a small piece of equipment that transmits information back to researchers about how much physical activity was performed. The devices also will be used for other studies on physical activity.
- $40,000 for equipment to provide the most accurate and non-invasive measurement available of muscle, fat, bone, brain mass and more. The new tool supports research aimed at obesity, aging issues, diabetes and other conditions and it will be used by 18 research groups that study energy balance and metabolism.
