Below is a list of achievements, activities and happenings involving UNMC staff, faculty and students.

UNMC cyclists and their families rode nearly 4,000 miles on Aug. 15 to finish second in the 2010 Corporate Cycling Challenge. Union Pacific amassed nearly 4,800 miles to finish first. Alegent riders notched nearly 3,400 miles to finish third.

The National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) will hold the second annual National Postdoctoral Appreciation Day on Friday, Sept. 24. In recognition, UNMC will host a Happy Hour Reception from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Durham Research Center II commons area.

A public open house will be held at the J. Paul and Eleanor McIntosh College of Nursing on the campus of Northeast Community College in Norfolk on Sunday, Sept. 19, from 3 to 5 p.m. The McIntosh College of Nursing houses the new UNMC College of Nursing Northern Division and Northeast Community College’s nursing programs.

UNMC health care professionals will provide free lung disease screenings at Husker Harvest Days, Sept. 14-16, in Grand Island. UNMC health professionals will provide free screenings for a hereditary cause of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), called alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency. The screening is for those with abnormal pulmonary function tests and/or a prior diagnosis of COPD.

UNMC level 4 accelerated nursing students recently held a health fair at the Charles Drew Health Center (29th and Grant streets) for the Omaha Healthy Start participants and the surrounding community as part of their Public/Community Health Nursing course. The health fair was aimed at education and screening for risk factors related to infant mortality and child safety.
