An expert in genetics will give a presentation open to the public on Tuesday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m. at Hastings College, Room 131 in the Morrison-Reeves Science Center. He also will present to the Grand Island Rotary Club during a breakfast meeting at 7 a.m.
Bruce Buehler, M.D., a professor of pediatrics and director of the Research Subject Advocacy Office at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, will provide information to audience members about how genes influence disease and how nutrition, supplements and lifestyle changes can change the odds.
While in central Nebraska, Dr. Buehler also will talk at the University of Nebraska at Kearney Chapter of Sigma Xi Science Café on Monday, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. at the Alumni House.
Dr. Buehler’s presentation is part of “UNMC Simply Science,” a statewide outreach program launched this year to strengthen UNMC’s commitment to communities across the state by sharing the latest in health care information.
“The idea is that we can’t change genes, but we can change our lifestyle so that we can prolong the onset of a disease, or perhaps even suppress it,” Dr. Buehler said. “Before, people may have thought, ‘Well, because I have this gene, I’m going to get this disease or affliction.’ Now, we know that we may be able to prevent a disease’s onset or perhaps delay its onset for many years.”
