The UNMC Department of Opthalmology has received a $100,000 grant from Research to Prevent Blindess (RPB) to support investigations into the causes, treatment and prevention of blinding diseases.
The research will be directed by Tom Hejkal, M.D., chairman of the department.
RPB is the world’s leading voluntary organization supporting eye research. To date, the organization has awarded grants totaling $1.54 million to UNMC.
Dr. Hejkal credits the accomplishments of the late Carl Camras, M.D., the department’s former chairman, and the scientists he recruited to UNMC.
“The outstanding scientists in our department have been extremely productive with the funding we have received from RPB,” Dr. Hejkal said. “They continue to make exciting progress in improving our understanding of the underlying causes of eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration.”
