Honoring the troops

As Sunday is Independence Day, UNMC Today would like to recognize those with medical center ties who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Pfc. Patrick McCormack, the brother of internal medicine’s Shannon Boerner, M.D., currently serves as a medic with the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y.

U.S. Army Sgt. J. Brandon Woods, the brother of graduate studies’ Rachel Schweitzer, is on the way home from a tour of duty in Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne Division from Fort Bragg, N.C.

Pfc. Andrew Houdesheldt, son of the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center’s Lisa Houdesheldt, is in basic training at Fort Sill, Okla.

Staff Sgt. Matthew Spalding, son of the College of Dentistry’s Peter Spalding, D.D.S., is a member of the Nebraska Army National Guard who will soon deploy to Afghanistan.

Army Capt. Brandon Cave, son of business services’ Linda Cave, is stationed in Hohenfels, Germany.

Army Pfc. Jarodd Hember, the nephew of ITS communications’ Sheri Lash, is in basic training at Fort Benning, Ga.

Airman Clayton Score-Mehrens, the son of academic service’s Sue Welch, recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.

Marine Cpl. Allen Novotny, the nephew of Allied Health’s Sue Prucia, has served two tours in Iraq and has earned several medals including a Purple Heart.

Army Staff Sgt. Lindy Marchese, the daughter of the College of Dentistry’s Janet John, is a recruiter in Omaha.

Airman 1st Class Danitha Amarawardana, the future son-in-law of the Eppley Institute’s Elizabeth Fleissner, is a crew chief on the F-16 fighter jet at Spangdahlem Air Force Base, Germany.

Army Capt. Eric Glassman, son of family medicine’s Mary Glassman, is in his second tour of duty as a helicopter pilot in Iraq.

Sgt. Daniel Johnson, son-in-law of the College of Nursing’s Cheryl Thompson, Ph.D., is a military policeman at Fort Hood, Texas.

Ross Grabenbauer, a Naval mechanic’s mate stationed in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Airman 1st Class Claire Grabenbauer, an aircraft weapons systems maintenance specialist at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City Beach, Fla., are the children of cardiology’s of Lisa Grabenbauer.

Seaman Rebecca von Behren of the U.S. Coast Guard and Airman 1st Class Elizabeth von Behren are the daughters of pediatric infectious diseases’ Raven von Behren.

    2nd Lt Wes Fink , U.S. Army, nephew of Kathy Austin, ophthalmology, will deploy to Afganistan in 2 weeks for a year tour. He is based in Colorado Springs.

    Thank you to all the families with loved ones away at this special time of the year. The sacrifices made by our troops to defend our freedoms is debt that we can never repay.
