October 1 is the deadline for prospective students who wish to apply for the June 2011 accelerated bachelor’s degree in nursing class at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing in Scottsbluff.
The college, based in Omaha, recently made major changes in admissions, curriculum and facilities in an effort to reduce Nebraska’s nursing shortage. The accelerated program now will run from June through May, instead of January through December.
The UNMC College of Nursing West Nebraska Division in Scottsbluff launched the accelerated program in 2007 with support from Regional West Medical Center. To date, 16 have graduated from the program and currently there are seven enrolled in the program. The college also has accelerated programs in Omaha and Lincoln.
Accelerated bachelor’s degree programs are intense programs that require students who already have a bachelor’s degree in another field, to take nursing classes for essentially one year — two semesters, as well as during the summer, without breaks. Clinical rotations also may be held on evenings and weekends. Students in traditional bachelor’s degree in nursing programs have earned 62 general college credits, then take nursing courses for four semesters, with summer and winter breaks.
