Wellness Wednesday – A bike ride for ‘night OwLs’

The inaugural OwL (Omaha with Lights) bike ride, a nighttime cycling adventure, will be held on Saturday, July 17 at 11 p.m.

picture disc.Proceeds benefit the Meyer Foundation for Disabilities, a supporter of UNMC’s Munroe-Meyer Institute and its adult recreation therapy program.

Opportunities for people with developmental disabilities to engage in social and recreation activities decline dramatically as they age. Currently, the adult rec program at MMI operates at capacity. Funds from the OwL Ride will contribute to future expansion of this program and others.

The ride consists of a16 mile route through the downtown, midtown, Dundee, Aksarben, Field Club and Old Market neighborhoods, with a shortcut available for a seven-mile ride.

The start and finish location is the Lewis and Clark Landing on the downtown riverfront. The band Playing with Fire will entertain the crowd before the event. A free bike corral for bicycle storage will be available during the concert.

With a non-competitive format, riders of all ages and skill levels can participate. Colleagues, friends and families are encouraged to form teams for the event.

Register online. The cost is:

  • $25 per rider; $50 per family (for online registrations by July 14); and
  • $35 per rider; $70 family (for onsite registration on July 17). Payments should be made with cash or check only.

Organizers also seek volunteers to help with the event.
