“I look forward to working with the UNMC Physicians’ leadership team focusing on the entire practice rather than limiting my efforts to my own specialty,” Dr. Smith said. “Much work has been done in partnership with the College of Medicine and the hospital.
“As that relationship continues to mature, we can better achieve the clinical and academic goals of the physician faculty. Our success is closely tied to the success of The Nebraska Medical Center and we need to continue to collaborate.”
Dr. Smith has begun to transition into his new role. In this capacity, he will work closely to facilitate communication and interaction between UNMC
Physicians, UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center.

Drs. Markin and Smith will help craft policy and vision for the College of Medicine and UNMC Physicians.
With significant improvements in patient and provider satisfaction, Dr. Smith feels that the practice is financially stable and has confidence in the experienced executive team.
“The practice is positioning itself to deal with the myriad of issues that surround health care reform,” Dr. Smith said. “I remain very optimistic about the continued success of UNMC Physicians. We must be nimble enough to respond to the health care needs of the patients and payers while minimizing the effects on the day-to-day practice.”
