American Indian conference yields collaboration, cultural understanding

As part of an effort to build and expand community relationships, UNMC’s Center for Reducing Health Disparities in the College of Public Health recently sponsored a regional conference to educate on and facilitate research with American Indian populations.

Red Shawl group performed traditional tribal dances to kick-off the American Indian conference.

The objectives of the workshop included:
  • Broaden knowledge of American Indian history and culture;
  • Explore techniques and strategies to improve co-learning between researchers and American Indian communities;
  • Demystify the research process and build authentic partnerships; and
  • Identify opportunities for meaningful engagement and collaborative projects.

Nearly 75 people attended the event.

The one-day conference highlighted an existing partnership between the Center for Reducing Health Disparities and the Aberdeen Area Tribal Chairman’s Health Board. Because of the strength of this relationship, community members, researchers and tribal leaders came together to learn and develop connections to facilitate community-based research initiatives and interventions.

The conference was made possible by a grant from the Association for Prevention, Teaching and Research (APTR). UNMC was one of five institutions nationwide which received a grant from this institution to address the challenges of meaningful engagement in research.
