Sex, Sexuality, Sexual Health to be topic of Feb. 9 Omaha Science Café

Everywhere we look, there is talk about sex and how it impacts our lives. Hear and engage in a candid conversation titled, “Sex, Sexuality, and Sexual Health,” with a researcher and scholar in the field.

Christopher Fisher, Ph.D., will be the featured speaker on Tuesday, Feb. 9, during the Omaha Science Café, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14th St. His talk will focus on what is really known about sex and what is yet to be discovered.

Dr. Fisher is an assistant professor in the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Public Health. He is a sexual health behaviorist who has trained with nationally recognized leaders in community-based participatory research, sexuality education, sexual health, gender, and human sexuality.

Science Cafes are held in Omaha the first Tuesday of each month. They are free educational events sponsored by UNMC, BioNebraska and the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures. The goal is to increase science literacy by getting young adults interested in science by presenting it in a casual setting.

Dr. Fisher’s research interests and publications primarily focus on the use of community-based participatory research to address sexual health, wellness, and education issues at the individual and community levels. He also has interests in policy implications particularly as they relate to sexuality education for adolescents and the socio-cultural dynamics of human sexuality.

His work addresses ethnically and racially diverse populations of all gender identities and sexual orientations. Dr. Fisher received recognition as an Exemplary Diversity Scholar from the National Center for Institutional Diversity at the University of Michigan in 2009. He currently serves as Treasurer for the HIV/AIDS section of American Public Health Association and is on the board of directors for the Public Health Association of Nebraska.

Free pizza will be provided by the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures for the first 50 people in attendance.
