Her work in continuing education made her pioneer in the field and led to her being given the UNMC Distinguished Service to Nursing Award in 1992.

Memorials can be made to the church or to the University of Nebraska Foundation Nursing Fund for Excellence.
I remember working with Lorraine when I was a new faculty member at the College of Nursing. What a lovely lady and a great professional role model.
Lorraine Hedman was acting dean of the CON between the time Rena Boyle left and I arrived and was a member of my administrative team. She was one of the first to use closed circuit TV for CE, and she published on it in the April '67 AJN. She could always be counted on. Most people who have commented to me have said what a "wonderful person" she was.
The College of Nursing is heartbroken over Lorraine's death. Her service to the College spanned almost 40 years. Even after retirement she remained an active Emeritus Faculty who was loved by all, and she never missed an event or gathering at the College. Personnally I will truly miss the warm smile and hug she always had for me. She loved this College and we loved her back.
She is an aunt of the hero, Gary Michael Joy! Her nephew, James Joy has no immediate family of his own
Her nephew, James Arthur Joy, went Home to be with the Lord on January 26, 2012. He was a Vietnam Veteran, and there are no direct descendants of neither Gary nor James today are known to exist.
