Shawn Gibbs, Ph.D., associate professor in the UNMC College of Public Health’s Department of Environmental, Agricultural and Occupational Health, is now a Certified Industrial Hygienist (C.I.H.) of the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).

To earn the ABIH credential, Dr. Gibbs met rigorous educational and experiential eligibility requirements and passed a comprehensive written examination.

The professional certification recognizes proficiency in areas such as air sampling, biohazards and medical surveillance/monitoring technologies.

The Department of Environmental, Agricultural & Occupational Health in UNMC’s College of Public Health is building a critical mass in industrial hygiene and anticipates other faculty members to be certified in the next few years.

The goal is to expand the number of experts working to improve workplace and community health. To date, there are only 22 other certified industrial hygienists in Nebraska.
