Arts for Hearts on Dec. 2 and 3

The annual Arts for Hearts show will be held on Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Durham Outpatient Center Central Atrium.

This year’s theme is “Create Abilities.” Order a T-shirt here.

Sponsored by the C. Louis Meyer Rehabilitation Foundation, the show features an assortment of handmade pottery and paintings along with holiday crafts.

Adult recreation therapy participant Christina Blanco tie dyes a scarf for the Arts for Hearts show with the help of volunteer Katy Brewster.
The items are created by adults with developmental disabilities who participate in various recreational therapy programs at the Munroe-Meyer Institute.

Proceeds from the event are used to fund current and future recreation programs geared toward adults with developmental disabilities.

Over the years, the event has raised more than $25,000 for programs such as the Thursday night social club, in which adults with developmental disabilities participate in cooking, arts and crafts, swimming and other recreation and leisure activities.

“Arts for Hearts gives our participants the chance to partake in fundraising for programs that they benefit from,” said Kelley Coutts, assistant director of recreation therapy at MMI. “It’s also a chance for people on the UNMC campus to buy someone a present and help our programs out at the same time.”
