UNMC Real Estate With Honors, the official off-campus housing listing service of the University of Nebraska Medical Center, is hosting a free “Off Campus Safety and First Time Home Buyers Workshop” on Tuesday, Sept. 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event will be held in the west atrium of the Durham Outpatient Center. It is open to all UNMC students and faculty as well as employees of The Nebraska Medical Center and UNMC Physicians. The public also is invited to attend.
The entire event is an open house format, so come as you are and as your schedule permits, said David Nelson, president and CEO of Crew Innovations, the firm that administers the Real Estate With Honors program. The event will focus on two areas – off campus safety and crime prevention and the soon-to-expire first-time home buyers’ federal tax credit, he said.
From 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., local real estate, mortgage and financing professionals will make a series of presentations about the $8,000 tax credit which is set to expire Nov. 30.
“This tax credit is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Jonie Sturek, director of relocation for CHSHOME Real Estate. “Anyone who is looking to purchase their first home over the next few months should plan to attend all or some of the presentations to receive the most up-to-date information and recommendations from the program’s panel of experts.”
From 12:30 to 2 p.m., Master Mike Kassebaum, a sixth-degree black belt and owner of ATA Krav Maga national training center in Omaha, will provide an off-campus safety workshop and self-defense demonstration. Krav Maga is the system of real world practical self-defense used by hundreds of law enforcement agencies to protect their officers.
“Learning self-defense begins with not thinking of yourself as a victim,” Kassebaum said. “This program will include information about being alert and looking strong and confident as your first line of defense. Techniques and scenarios will be presented to reduce your chances of becoming a victim of a violent crime or sexual assault.”
This program will be broken up into several sections, Nelson said, so people can stop in and learn as they have time. Crowd participation will be encouraged. Talks will deal with awareness and safety at home, work place or car. Participants will learn how to react if someone grabs you from behind, choke defenses and protecting your personal space.
In addition, more than a dozen participating companies of UNMC Real Estate With Honors will be on hand to answer questions and share their knowledge in a trade show environment. Local service providers will include experts in real estate sales and rentals, banking, mortgage financing, child care near UNMC, relocation, lawn care and landscaping, personal financial planning, and cable/Internet/phone service. Refreshments will be provided.
Since its launch last April, new UNMC students, staff and faculty from 42 states and 20 countries have utilized www.UNMCRealEstateWithHonors.com to find off-campus housing and learn about living in Omaha, Nelson said.
Nelson encouraged those who can’t make the workshop to browse the Web site and check out the tremendous amount of information on relocating and buying, renting or selling real estate in the metro area. The site includes thousands of real estate listings, both on and off-campus, he said.
