The Midwestern Regional Global Health conference will be Sept. 11-13 at the Doubletree Hotel in downtown Omaha.
UNMC’s International Studies and Programs and Student Alliance for Global Health sponsor the conference, which is one of the only ones of its kind in the Midwest.
“While our target audience is Midwestern medical/health students, we know that what we are offering will also attract medical/health professionals and community members who have a high degree of interest in global health,” said Sara Pirtle, coordinator of UNMC International Studies and Programs. “To all of these individuals, we aim to offer the chance to congregate in their own backyards and be inspired by the stories and wisdom of our global health presenters and to benefit from the outstanding networking opportunities that this venue provides.”
Donna Barry, advocacy and policy director at Partners in Health, will give the keynote address.
Other speakers include:
- Ed Atwell, M.D., founder and president of Medical Outreach of America, established in 2009;
- Keith Brown, D.O., founder of Global Medicine Rescue Services, which specializes in training courses in wilderness, expedition, remote and austere medicine that are offered in Central American and Pakistan; and
- John Leisure, creative/development director of the Engeye Health Clinic in Ddegeya Village in southern Uganda.
Attendees will see Irene Taylor Brodsky’s 2008 Academy Award nominated documentary, The Final Inch, which shows the public health mission to eradicate polio.
The cost for those who register by Sept. 1 is $75 for students and $125 for others. Fees increase for those who register after Sept. 1.
