Twelve-year-old Agnes Warner stamps her fingerprints during a recent lesson on forensics investigation at UNMC. The lesson for Warner and seven other American Indian youths was part of a three-day summer science camp at the medical center and was taught by Michael Hanna, a former special agent with the FBI. The camp aims to strengthen math and science curriculum of youths on reservations in Nebraska and South Dakota. This is the second year American Indian youths have come to UNMC to learn about careers in the health sciences. The camp is funded by a five-year, $1.3 million Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) grant. SEPA is a national program funded by the National Center for Research Resources, an institute of the National Institutes of Health. Maurice Godfrey, Ph.D., associate professor of pediatrics at UNMC, is the principal investigator on the grant. |
