Joanne Johnson, director of patient information at UNMC’s Munroe-Meyer Institute, reads MMI employee Tammy Herring’s letter to KGOR radio personality Dave Wingert — in which Herring requested a free lunch for her department.

There is such a thing as a free lunch.

KGOR radio personality Dave Wingert delivered it to employees in the patient information office at UNMC’s Munroe-Meyer Institute on Monday.

Catered by Gerda’s, the food was thanks to faithful KGOR listener and intake coordinator at MMI, Tammy Herring. Herring entered her department in the “Wing Dings” contest a couple months ago.

“I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to let the public know that MMI is such a wonderful place to work,” she said. “We enjoy our jobs and are always there for the many families who need us.

“I consider myself very lucky to have a job that I truly love.”

For that she credits her boss, Joanne Johnson, director of patient information at MMI.

“Having a boss like Joanne makes all the difference in the world. She treats all her employees with such respect and always makes herself available when needed,” Herring said. “I know I am speaking for everyone in our department when I say we are all very lucky to have such a wonderful, caring boss.”

Quipped Wingert: “That’s one of the many advantages of ‘Wing Dings’ — kissing up to your boss.”

For the past five years, Wingert has emceed the C. Louis Meyer Walk and Roll for Disabilities held at Westroads. At the “Wing Dings” lunch on Monday, he praised MMI for its “passionate care about the quality of life” for children with disabilities.
