115 UNMC senior medical students receive residency assignments

A total of 115 senior medical students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center received their residency assignments today through the National Resident Matching Program. A residency is a training program for newly-graduated physicians, in the area of medicine of their choice.

Match Day uses a computer program to produce favorable results for applicants, that aligns the preferences of applicants with the preferences of residency programs in order to fill the thousands of training positions available at U.S. teaching hospitals.

Of the 115 UNMC students who matched, 34 percent are staying in Nebraska for their training programs. Twenty-nine percent will do residencies at UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center, UNMC’s hospital partner.

More than, 15,600 U.S. medical school seniors simultaneously held “Match Day” ceremonies to learn where they will spend residency training following graduation. The students were joined by family and friends. This year’s match day is the largest in history – with 400 more U.S. students than last year.

Ninety-three percent of U.S. medical school seniors matched to a residency program this year; 82 percent of these students matched to one of their top three choices.

The UNMC students, slated to graduate May 1, are listed by hometown, name, specialty and residency assignment.
