Schroeder elected to chair NU Board of Regents

Kent Schroeder

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents on Friday elected Kent Schroeder as chairperson for 2009.

Schroeder, from Kearney, represents District 6 and has served on the Board of Regents since 1998. He was re-elected in 2004, and previously served as chairperson in 2002 and as vice chairperson in 2008 and 2001.

Regent Bob Phares of North Platte — who represents District 7 — was elected vice chairperson for 2009.

Schroeder is an attorney in private practice in Kearney. He has served on the boards of directors of the Kearney Chamber of Commerce, Central Community College, Good Samaritan Health Systems, Sentinel Health Care and the Nebraska Association of Trial Attorneys. He also is a former member of the Kearney City Council and Kearney School Board.

Phares is a past president of the League of Nebraska Municipalities and former board chairman of the North Platte Chamber of Commerce. He is the former director of the North Platte Development Corporation, NEBRASKAland Days, Inc., and the North Platte United Way Fund. He has been involved with the Great Plains Regional Medical Center for more than 20 years, and served eight years as chairman of its board of directors. He is a past president of the North Platte Rotary Club, and served as district governor from 1996 to 1997.

The Board of Regents consists of eight members elected to six-year terms, and four nonvoting student regents who represent each of the four NU campuses.
