Funeral services for Shawn Jessen will be held today at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in South Sioux City, Neb., at 10 a.m.
Jessen — a research technician in the Eppley Institute — died Friday at his home from complications related to diabetes. He was 28.
Jessen had been at UNMC for about nine months and was working toward becoming a Ph.D. student at UNMC, said Hamid Band, M.D., Ph.D., professor in the Eppley Institute who oversaw the lab in which Jessen worked.
“He was really a person full of vitality and vigor and he was absolutely wonderful to have in the lab,” Dr. Band said. “This is certainly a tragic thing to happen to someone so young. Our thoughts are with his family. This has to be incredibly hard for them.”
