The 12-member committee is responsible for evaluating new cancer drugs for safety and effectiveness. It also recommends approval for drugs to treat cancer. The committee works under the auspices of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, which reviews drug applications for prescription and over-the-counter medications.
“It’s an honor to be selected,” said Dr. Grem, UNMC professor of internal medicine in the section of hematology and oncology. “This committee analyzes new drug therapies that can provide hope to millions of cancer patients.”
Current members of the committee include cancer experts from Duke University, Stanford University, Mayo Clinic and the National Cancer Institute.
As co-program leader in the cancer genes and molecular regulation program of the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center, and a co-cirector of the cancer center’s recently-secured GI/Pancreatic Cancer SPORE grant, Dr. Grem is known nationally as an expert in gastrointestinal malignancies and currently explores several novel therapeutic approaches in both colon and pancreatic cancer at UNMC.
She has published more than 110 peer-reviewed articles in various cancer-related medical journals.
“Dr. Grem is widely respected for her expertise,” said Ken Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., director of UNMC’s Eppley Cancer Center. “Her passion for improving the lives of cancer patients through research is another reason for her appointment to this prestigious committee.
“In addition, her selection is an indication of the national reputation of UNMC’s Eppley Cancer Center.”
Dr. Grem joined UNMC in 2003 after serving as the head gastrointestinal cancer researcher/clinician at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Bethesda, Md. Dr. Grem, who joined the NCI in 1986, was a colleague of Dr. Cowan, who worked at the NCI for 21 years before coming to UNMC in 1999.
