This week the Cornhuskers travel to one of the coldest places on Earth (see Dr. Zatechka’s comments below) — Ames, Iowa — to play the Cyclones of Iowa State.
Will the Huskers build off of last week’s strong showing during the 37-31 overtime loss to the seventh-ranked Red Raiders and topple Iowa State? Or will it be “Attack of the Clones” in Ames as the Huskers drop their fourth game of the season?
Below we hear from our panel concerning the game in Ames. Sitting in for Dr. Hill this week will be Nicole Lindquist, a 2005 Iowa State graduate and an ardent Cyclone fan.
As is the case for nearly every ISU home game, Lindquist and her husband, Rob, will be in the stands Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium rooting on the Clones to beat Nebraska.
We’ll give our guest panelist the first crack at calling this week’s game.
Lindquist says: “The Huskers almost came away with a big upset on the road last week. Key word: almost. The Cyclones on the other hand, found me turning the channel by halftime with their pathetic showing at Baylor, i.e., their inability to score a touchdown with first-and-goal from the 2-yard line. But I must point out that the week prior to that, my alma mater gave it a go with 16th-ranked Kansas at home, losing by two points after a stellar first half, while the Huskers got pounded at home by Missouri. My prediction has it coming down to a field goal after four quarters of trading touchdowns. This one the Clones’ kicker will actually make!” Iowa State 24, NU 21
Dr. Zatechka says: “Look for Iowa State to rebound from their thrashing by Baylor and play the Huskers tough in Ames — a surprisingly tough place to play due to an anomalous weather vortex that keeps the temperature in Ames perpetually near freezing. Hopefully, if penalties are kept to a relative minimum and the Huskers play the same brand of ball displayed against Texas Tech, they should pull out a win. Expect to see continued effort at running the ball with NU keeping the schemes more simplified. Getting linebackers Cody Glenn and Phillip Dillard back will, hopefully, shore up the run defense and force Iowa State’s quarterback Justin Arnaud to try and win by passing.” NU 28, Iowa State 10
Kelsay and Runco say: “We’d like to say this next game will be a big Husker win after the impressive performance on the road last week (although we’re still irritated at the inexcusable penalties that cost us that game — we let it slip away, that should have been a win). Regardless, we believe the Huskers will struggle some on the road this week in Ames. You’d like to think that we’ve made significant strides, which we have, and this week would be an opportunity to punish a weak, weak, weak ISU team. Unfortunately, we are not sold on the consistency of this team, yet. NU will win, but it will be much closer of a game than many believe — and much closer than it should be. After getting taken to the woodshed by Baylor last week, ISU will try to prove something against the Huskers.” NU 34, Iowa State 24
