Hundreds of new UNMC students from several colleges recently donned white coats during ceremonies held across the state.

The white coats are given annually to new UNMC students to serve as symbols of professionalism as they make their initial forays into health care careers.
Here are some interesting facts and figures from the recent ceremonies:

389
— the total number of white coats handed out to UNMC students during the recent ceremonies for the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy.

100
and 65 — the first number represents the number of years pharmacy education has been conducted in Nebraska and the second is the number of new pharmacy students who received white coats recently.

132
— the number of students in the College of Medicine’s incoming class — the largest group of incoming UNMC medical students in the past 30 years.

123
— the number of College of Nursing students who received white coats at ceremonies held at the college’s campuses in Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney and Scottsbluff.

3
— the number of years alumni from various colleges have donated money to sponsor the white coats, which will be worn by the students until they graduate from their respective colleges and programs. Donations also help pay for student scholarships and student programming

7
— the number of new College of Dentistry students who came to UNMC via the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP). A full story on these students will run soon in UNMC Today.

22
— The number of states — including the District of Columbia — from which new UNMC students hail. The new students came to UNMC from Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington state, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

2
— the number of countries besides the United States that three new UNMC students call home. Kenya (Laura Orwe, College of Pharmacy, and Sassen Kwasa, College of Medicine) and South Korea (Jaeyeon Kim, College of Pharmacy) both have representatives in the incoming class of UNMC students.

1
— the number of years the College of Nursing has held Nightingale white coat ceremonies. Yep, this is the first year. Previously nursing students had taken part in induction ceremonies but 2008 marked the first time the nursing students dawned white coats, which they will wear when they work in laboratories.
