From right, state Sen. Tom Hansen, his grandson, Ryan, UNMC Assistant Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance Ken Hansen and UNMC Vice Chancellor for External Affairs Bob Bartee tour the Sorrell Center’s clinical skills laboratory on Wednesday.

The new Sorrell Center will be a major tool for UNMC as it looks to recruit the nation’s best students and faculty, state Sen. Tom Hansen said Wednesday after a tour of the College of Medicine’s new home.

“It’s very nice,” the senator from North Platte said. “It’s really high-tech and that’s just what you need for recruiting.”

Hansen, his wife, Linda, and his grandson, Ryan, visited the medical center to take a look at some of the newest developments on the UNMC campus.

During their visit, they met with several UNMC faculty members including Joe Vetro, Ph.D., research assistant professor in the College of Pharmacy, and Ben Boedeker, M.D., professor of anesthesiology.

Dr. Boedeker demonstrated how to use his system for battlefield tracheal intubation and even let the Hansens try the device out on a patient simulator.

Afterwards, when asked if he could perform the procedure in real conditions, Hansen jokingly said, “you’d have to let me see Dr. Boedeker’s presentation at least one more time.”

Hansen also met with UNMC Vice Chancellor for External Affairs Bob Bartee, who thanked the senator and his family for visiting the medical center.

“This is a real exciting time at the medical center,” Bartee said. “I was glad Sen. Hansen and his family took the time to visit us and see some of the things that have generated a lot of enthusiasm on campus and across the entire state.”
