UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., will receive a Men of Honor Award from the 100 Black Men of Omaha, Inc., on Saturday. The third annual black-tie gala event recognizes individuals whose service to the community fulfills the mission of the organization.

Besides promoting economic prosperity, educational advancement and mentoring programs, the 100 Black Men organization seeks to reduce health disparities.

“When you look at what UNMC has accomplished in terms of outreach and diversity, we can legitimately say we have developed a national reputation for raising awareness about the importance of cultural competency,” said Rubens Pamies, M.D., UNMC vice chancellor for academic affairs, who nominated Dr. Maurer.

Outreach efforts such as the SHARING Clinics, the Center for Reducing Health Disparities; along with the Dillard and the Virginia-Nebraska Alliance recruitment programs are examples of UNMC’s success. Dr. Pamies said none of these gains could have happened without the support and blessing of Dr. Maurer.

“I’m honored by this recognition from the 100 Black Men of Omaha,” Dr. Maurer said. “Its members are truly dedicated to improving the quality of life for all Omaha-area residents and I’m happy to support their efforts.”

UNMC and the city of Omaha’s underserved populations have benefited from Dr. Maurer’s leadership, Dr. Pamies said.

“His compassion and interest in health care for all is evident in his everyday life,” Dr. Pamies said. “Through his strategic vision, he has created a legacy for Omaha and its minority health professionals.”

The 100 Black Men of Omaha gala will be held Saturday, May 31 at the Qwest Center. U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson is the honorary chairperson. University of Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne is the featured guest and speaker.

A 2008 Men of Award will also be given to Thomas Harvey, assistant superintendent of student and community services at the Omaha Public Schools.

Past recipients include former U.S Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher, author and national commentator Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, Omaha community leader and philanthropist Michael Yanney, and the metropolitan area members of the World War II Tuskegee Airmen.
