Lookin’ at U — Kim Laursen
Quick, think of five things others should know about you.
That’s the theme behind a series in UNMC Today called “Lookin’ at U.” Each Thursday, we will randomly select a medical center employee to feature.
This week, we feature Kim Laursen, education coordinator in information technology services. Here, in her own words, are some fun facts about Kim:

I love the outdoors. I love to garden and am very anxious to get spring planting started after such a long winter! When the weather cooperates, I’m outside as much as possible.
I love all kinds of music — especially classic rock and roll, blues and funky jazz. My favorite singer is Bonnie Raitt. I also love the Clark Brothers, who recently won the Greatest American Band contest. I would love to go on a jazz cruise someday!
I have a 20 year old son who is a sophomore at UNO and a 39 year old stepson who is married with two small children and lives in Mitchell, S.D. My husband, Doug, is semi-retired but works part-time reporting the news at KVNO. My parents are 85, still garden and use the computer to e-mail me every day!
When I graduated from University of Nebraska at Kearney in the 1970s, I wanted to be in the foreign service, but ended up teaching business in Millard for two years. I missed using my Spanish and took a job working in international sales, which I loved. But the company went out of business and I came to UNMC in 1980, thinking it would be a “short term” job. I’ve been in the same department all of these years but have worked as an administrative assistant, helpdesk supervisor and for the last 16 years, education coordinator. Since my background and education is in teaching and communication, I love being able to teach adults and helping them do their jobs better. Being in the technology field, change is constant, which makes my job challenging but fun.
When I retire I want to relearn the Spanish that I have forgotten and become a nature photographer who travels the world capturing interesting shots. The biggest obstacle will be trying to talk my husband into traveling by air!
