115 UNMC senior medical students receive residency assignments

A total of 115 senior medical students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center have received their residency assignments through the National Resident Matching Program. A residency is a training program for newly-graduated physicians in the area of medicine of their choice.

On March 20 at the same time, more than 15,000 U.S. medical school seniors, friends and family held “Match Day” ceremonies to learn where they will spend residency training following graduation.

National Resident Matching Program is designed to optimize the rank ordered choices of students in medical programs. Of the 115 Nebraska students who matched, 36 percent are staying in Nebraska for their training programs. Thirty-four percent will do residencies at UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center, UNMC’s hospital partner.

More than 94 percent of seniors nationwide who applied for residencies this year were paired with a program of their choice—the highest percentage in more than three decades.

The 2008 Match was also the largest ever. Overall, 28,737 applicants vied for one of 22,240 first-year residency positions—the most applicants in history.

The UNMC students, slated to graduate May 2, are listed by hometown, name, specialty and residency assignment.
