Thursday’s lunch and learn on affirmative action to be broadcast off site

A lunch and learn session regarding a legislative initiative aimed at banning affirmative action will be held Thursday at noon in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater. It also will be broadcast to sites off campus.

The session will include a panel discussion about the initiative, known as LR 233CA, and its potential devastating impact on UNMC’s efforts to create a diverse workforce and student body. This includes potential negative affects on UNMC programs aimed at recruiting and retaining faculty and students from diverse backgrounds.

The forum will be broadcast to the:

  • College of Dentistry in Lincoln, Dixon Lecture Hall
  • University of Nebraska at Kearney, West Center 148
  • Scottsbluff, Panhandle Station, Room No. 100.

All employees are encouraged to attend the forum, which will include an opportunity for employees to ask questions. Lunch will be provided on the Omaha campus for the first 50 employees to attend.

Bob Bartee, vice chancellor for external affairs, will moderate the discussion and the panel will be composed of:

  • Rubens Pamies, M.D., vice chancellor for academic affairs;
  • Myrna Newland, M.D., director of UNMC’s equity office;
  • Gordon Todd, Ph.D., president of the UNMC Faculty Senate; and
  • Curtis McKnight, president of the UNMC Student Senate.

If passed by the Legislature, the initiative would be placed on the November ballot for voter approval.
