Formal dedication of Olson outpatient center today

A formal dedication of the new outpatient center at the Olson Center for Women’s Health will take place this morning, and public tours and refreshments will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m.

The Olson center occupies the entire fourth floor of the Durham Outpatient Center.

The Olson Center will house specialists in primary care, OB/GYN, high-risk obstetrics, breast care, dermatology, pain management, physical therapy, infertility, midwifery, incontinence, mental health and menopause management. The 25,000-square-foot facility is double the size of UNMC’s previous OB/GYN clinic.

“There’s no women’s center in Omaha that attempts this comprehensive approach,” said Carl Smith, M.D., professor and chairman of the UNMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. “Other centers focus on OB/GYN or breast cancer. The Olson Center will focus on the entire woman. Our goal has been to create a truly comprehensive center that will allow women to meet the vast majority of their health care needs in one facility.”

The outpatient center was made possible through donations made by Dr. Leland and Dorothy Olson of Omaha.

A UNMC medical school graduate, Dr. Leland Olson is a retired obstetrics and gynecology physician who practiced in Omaha for many years. Dorothy Olson is a graduate of the UNMC College of Nursing.

The new outpatient center offers on-site digital mammography, bone density screening, urodynamics and a full-service, accredited prenatal diagnostic unit. The staff will include counselors with expertise in genetics, social work, nutrition, weight management, smoking cessation, lactation and childbirth education.

More than 30 health professionals will work full-time in the Olson Center with more than 20 health professionals providing part-time assistance.

“To my knowledge, this is the first true inter-department clinic at UNMC,” Dr. Smith said. “Virtually all of the OB/GYN department is part of the Olson Center. In addition, the departments of internal medicine, surgery, dermatology, urology and psychiatry are also represented. It is a multi-department operation, and we’re very proud of that.”
