Gov. Dave Heineman to proclaim May 11 as Nebraska Hispanic Nurses Day
WHO: UNMC College of Nursing staff and students, and representatives from other area academic and health care institutions are part of the Nebraska National Hispanic Association.
WHAT: A Nebraska chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses was created recently. The goal is to improve the health of the Hispanic/Latino community in Nebraska through a variety of ways, with a focus on increasing the number of Hispanic nurses in Nebraska. With the growth of the Hispanic/Latino population in Nebraska, the need for diverse healthcare professionals is great.
WHY: From 1990 to 2000, the Hispanic/Latino community in Nebraska grew 155 percent, but there are very few Hispanic nurses.

Two recent graduates of the UNMC College of Nursing, Luisa Rounds, and Rosa Weatherly, are available for interviews. Rounds and Weatherly co-founded the Nebraska chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses and can talk about why it’s important to the state.
