That was the response from Rodney Markin, M.D., Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of UNMC Physicians, regarding news that Cory Shaw had been named to the Midlands Business Journal’s 40 under 40 list.
“He’s actually a pretty sophisticated kid considering where he’s from,” Dr. Markin joked about Shaw, an Aurora-native who is chief administrative officer for UNMC Physicians.
But when the joking stopped, Dr. Markin said Shaw is invaluable to the operation of UNMC Physicians and that his name belonged on the 40 under 40 list, which recognizes Omaha-area business standouts under the age of 40.
“Basically, I drink the coffee and he does all the work,” Dr. Markin said of his relationship with Shaw. “I give him responsibility to run in the areas that he has knowledge and I haven’t had to overturn any of his decisions.
“I wouldn’t trade him for anything. He’s a great guy.”
Dr. Markin, who also is senior associate dean for clinical affairs at UNMC’s College of Medicine, was among those who supported Shaw’s nomination for the honor.
Shaw, 37, has been in his current position — in which he manages the day-to-day operations of the practice, its 400 doctors and nearly 600 employees — since December of 1999.
It was an honor to be recognized, Shaw said, but it wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for the people he works with.
“I was surprised and humbled to learn that I was nominated and selected for the Midlands Business Journal’s 2006 40 under 40 award,” Shaw said. “While the award names an individual, in this case it’s truly a tribute to the achievements of UNMC, UNMC Physicians and The Nebraska Medical Center.”
Shaw and the other 40 under 40 honorees were recognized Friday at a breakfast at the Holiday Inn Central Convention Center.
“I have literally grown up here on campus,” Shaw said. “I have benefited from the opportunity to work with and learn from many people who have taken the time to guide, mentor and educate me about health care, academics and life in general. I’m grateful for their support.”
