Carol Goranson, president of the Munroe-Meyer Institute Operating Board, died Thursday (Oct. 12) in an automobile accident.
The accident occurred about an hour after a meeting of the board, said Bruce Buehler, M.D., director of the Munroe-Meyer Institute.
Goranson, 60, was in a two-car accident on eastbound Interstate 480 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, when she was ejected from her vehicle. She died at the scene.
“She was just a super lady,” Dr. Buehler said. “She was just the most giving person you would ever meet. She exuded love. She was a kind person and I’m going to miss her.”
Goranson was a longtime member of the board and had served as president for about two years. She is a native of Macon, Mo., but had lived in Omaha for many years.
Goranson earned a reputation as a leading local proponent of special education and was also a dedicated piano teacher. Her sudden death has been very hard to take, Dr. Buelher said.
“She cared about every human being, with or without disabilities,” he said. “The board adored her. They truly loved her.”
A memorial service for Goranson will be held at 11 a.m. today at Central Presbyterian Church on the corner of 55th and Leavenworth streets in Omaha.
