End of Ak-Sar-Ben reign caps ‘special year’ for Dr. Maurer

UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer’s reign as Ak-Sar-Ben king will end this weekend, capping a “special year” for Dr. Maurer and his wife, Beverly.

“I’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of others, from coast to coast,” Dr. Maurer said. “A Nebraska tradition and institution since 1895, the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben continues to be a great organization that unifies business and community leaders while underscoring the importance of community service. The group’s spirit continues to be vibrant.”

Dr. Maurer was named the 109th King of Ak-Sar-Ben last October, and he served his reign with Queen Lisa Diesing, the daughter of Jack and Terri Diesing of Omaha. The 110th King and Queen will be announced tomorrow (Saturday), as part of the Coronation Ball.

“I thank the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben and the Women’s Ball Committee for all of their work with this event and for the wonderful charitable works that they’re accomplishing in our community,” Dr. Maurer said. “To Queen Lisa Diesing and her parents, Jack and Terri, I offer my congratulations. It has been a pleasure to share this year’s experiences with you.”

Dr. Maurer said his reign as Ak-Sar-Ben king has encouraged him to do more for Omaha, for Nebraska and for humanity.

“During this year, I’ve met a lot of wonderful people who selflessly give their time and resources to make a positive impact in people’s lives. This spirit of giving makes Omaha unique and provides a foundation for our quality of life,” he said.

That quality of life is enhanced by UNMC’s progression toward world-class status, Dr. Maurer said. “Certainly, this progression would not be possible without the community support that we have received. This support will continue to propel us toward our goal of being a world-class academic health sciences center.”

Dr. Maurer also emphasized the work of his wife, Beverly, “who deserved the recognition as much as I do.”

“She has embraced the Omaha community and works diligently for this city and this state,” Dr. Maurer said. “Her unending enthusiasm and spirit drive me to do better every day.”
