Activities, broadcast to highlight National Pharmacy Week

In honor of National Pharmacy Week, Nebraska Educational Telecommunications (NET) will air “Pharmacists: Unsung Heroes” on Sunday at 6 p.m.

Produced by WLIW New York Public Television, in association with Parental Drug Association (PDA), Foundation for Pharmaceutical Sciences, Inc., the one-hour documentary premiered in October 2005 during American Pharmacists Month and aired in several markets nationwide.

“The documentary exposes and shows potential students the diversity of the role of pharmacy in the health care field,” said Clarence Ueda, Ph.D., Pharm.D., dean of UNMC’s College of Pharmacy. “It will hopefully get those students undecided about what to do when they grow up to think about pharmacy.”

“Pharmacists: Unsung Heroes” explores the indispensable link pharmacists have between health care and patient medication use. The documentary traces the history of pharmacy and provides a deeper understanding of the profession in hopes of encouraging more people to enter the field.

The UNMC College of Pharmacy is celebrating National Pharmacy Week, which runs from Oct. 23 through Oct. 27, with a variety of events, said Lindsay Gortemaker, a third-year pharmacy student and publicist for the Academy of Student Pharmacists Chapter at UNMC.

Students will promote pharmacy with radio advertisements, as well as informational mailings to pharmacies across Nebraska. A Healthy Heartland screening will be held Oct. 21 in Seward and an Oct. 25 College of Pharmacy luncheon will include Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey making an official proclamation in honor of National Pharmacy Week.

During National Pharmacy Week, the Rural Pharmacy Student Association (RPSA) will sponsor the decorations in the College of Pharmacy; Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity will provide dessert for the Oct. 25 luncheon; and Kappa Epsilon Pharmacy Fraternity will promote Breast Cancer Awareness.

College of Pharmacy students will also be giving flu shots as part of Operation Immunization.
