The UNMC College of Medicine recognized John Batter, M.D., as the 2005 recipient of its Volunteer Faculty of the Year Award during the UNMC College of Medicine Honors Convocation and Hooding Ceremony in May.
The award was established in 2001 to honor volunteer faculty members who have played an extraordinary role in the educational programs of students and residents and are an invaluable asset to UNMC.
A private practitioner, Dr. Batter has worked closely with UNMC faculty, residents and students since 2004. He also served from 1999 to 2002.
“He has always been willing to serve unselfishly on behalf of the university,” said Byers Shaw Jr., M.D., chairman of the Department of Surgery in the UNMC College of Medicine.
Dr. Batter received his doctorate of medicine from Creighton University in 1987. He completed his general surgery residency at Creighton University and a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Dr. Batter plays a vital role in the residency program, said Kim Duncan, M.D., chief of cardiothoracic surgery and professor of cardiothoracic surgery at UNMC. “He is a vital part of the residency program and a great academic role model for our general surgery residents.”
“He provides outstanding clinical service to our patients and is an outstanding teacher for our residents,” Dr. Duncan said. “He makes himself available for the residents and students and is genuinely interested in providing superb education and patient care.”
