Music as Medicine series finishes second year

picture disc. The second year of the “Music as Medicine” series wrapped up on a high note.
Thursday’s final performance capped a year filled with various musical styles from classical to jazz. The concert featured four members of the Omaha Chamber Music Society.

The diverse musical styles have made a difference in attendance.

“People appreciate a variety of music and that is what attracts people with different musical tastes,” said John Benson Jr., M.D., the professor of internal medicine who kicked off the “Music as Medicine” series.

The series, which is free to all staff, students and patients, was created to offer solitude from the day-to-day hustle and bustle. “It is a quiet interlude to the technological environment,” Dr. Benson said.

This year’s series began in October and continued each month on the third Thursday through May. Each performance took place at noon and lasted approximately an hour.

Although he may wish for larger audiences, Dr. Benson said overall, the series was a success. “We’ve averaged over 100 people during each performance not including those individuals who pass by,” Dr. Benson said. “It’s just been wonderful.”

He is especially grateful to this year’s five sponsors: UNMC, the Center for Continuing Education, UNMC Physicians, the University of Nebraska Foundation and The Nebraska Medical Center.
