Students blog about spring break trips

Two second-year medical students and a first-year student participating in the Student Alliance for Global Health spring break trips are blogging about their experiences on UNMC’s Web site.

Andrea Mack is writing about her trip to the Native American reservation in Sisseton, S.D. Her blog can be found at www.unmc.edu/blog/Reservation/.
Blogs for Marci Holmes and Casey Collier can be found at www.unmc.edu/blog/saghtrips/. Holmes is sharing her experiences from Nicaragua, where she is serving at a clinic in San Marco. Collier is working at a clinic in Falmouth, Jamaica.

So far, the entries cover the first three days of each trip. More entries are expected as the students complete their seven-day excursions.

“Blogging provides a first-person narrative that makes the students’ accounts more personal,” said Theresa Cassiday, UNMC’s Web/Online Communications Coordinator. “The students can post their entries and photos using their own voice and style, bringing a new perspective to their experiences.”

This is the first time blogging has been used officially at UNMC, Cassiday said. The Learning Environment and Internet Services (LEIS) Department set up the blog, said Dan Moser, associate director of Information Technology Services.

“This is an exciting opportunity to use a new technology,” Cassiday said. “We look forward to expanding the use of blogging, podcasting and other cutting-edge technologies on the UNMC Web site as opportunities arise to use them.”
