Music as Medicine series returns for second year

Music as Medicine kicks off its second year of noon hour concerts on Thursday, Oct. 20 with jazz singer, Susie Thorne.

“We’re pleased to have the opportunity to continue these free concerts and provide an interlude for people who like music,” said John Benson Jr., M.D., professor of internal medicine, who initiated the idea for the new “Music as Medicine” series. “In this technological age it’s nice to have a calming and humane repose in a hospital and health care setting.”

Individuals are encouraged to bring their lunch and eat (quiet is appreciated), while enjoying a variety of music each month from jazz to chamber to vocal. Medical center faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the free performances, as well as patients, their families and the public.

Various musical groups will perform throughout the series, which is sponsored by UNMC, The Nebraska Medical Center, University Medical Associates, the UNMC Center for Continuing Education and the University of Nebraska Foundation. Performances again are planned for the third Thursday of each month through May.

The following noon performances are scheduled:

  • Thursday, Oct. 20 – Susie Thorne, and her jazz quartet, in the Durham Outpatient Center Atrium.

  • Nov. 17 – Omaha Chamber Music Society in the Durham Outpatient Center Atrium.

  • Dec. 15 – North High School Concert (tentative) in the Durham Outpatient Center.

  • Jan. 19, 2006 – Omaha Chamber Music Society in the Storz Pavilion.
