Women’s Health and Wellness Conference Oct. 14

The eighth annual Omaha Women’s Health and Wellness Conference will be Friday, Oct. 14, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the DC Centre in Omaha, 11830 Stonegate Circle, located three blocks south of 120th & Maple Streets.

The conference, titled “Navigating the Hormone Highway” will feature talks about the effect of hormones during perimenopause and menopause, their impact on self-esteem, sexuality, and on health issues including osteoporosis, diabetes, and thyroid conditions.

Educational health and wellness exhibits and screenings, continental breakfast and luncheon, keynote speakers, also will be included. The conference is sponsored by UNMC, the Olson Center for Women’s Health, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, The Nebraska Medical Center and Wellness Council of the Midlands.

The cost of the conference is $40, which includes breakfast, lunch, lectures and 25 exhibits. For an additional $30, nurses can receive 5.4 continuing education credits. Limited scholarships are available for women with financial restrictions. Free and low cost screenings will be available, including thyroid, cholesterol, and blood pressure screenings.

Scheduled breakfast keynote speaker is Denise Maybank, Ph.D., associate vice president for student affairs and services, Michigan State University and formerly associate to the president of the University of Nebraska. Her speech is titled, “Hormone Highway: It’s a Trip.” Luncheon keynote is Marie Micheletto, psychotherapist and lecturer, Archdiocesan Consultation Service, whose speech is titled, “Self-Esteem During Times of Change.”

A general session titled, “Riding the Hormone Shuttle To and Through Mid-life,” on the effect of hormones during perimenopause and menopause, will be conducted by Victoria Maclin, M.D., Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.

Conference attendees can choose from a variety of breakout sessions throughout the day.

Breakout session one includes:


  • “Osteoporosis, Osteopenia, and You: Who’s at Risk and What Can You Do About It,” by N. Jean Amoura, M.D., UNMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Lori Schmaderer, rehabilitation services, The Nebraska Medical Center.
  • “Dealing with Diabetes,” will be presented by Jennifer Larsen, M.D., UNMC Department of Internal Medicine;
  • “Aging and Sexuality: Social & Cultural Aspects,” presented by David Corbin, Ph.D., University of Nebraska at Omaha School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, and Valda Ford, UNMC Community and Multicultural Affairs.
    Breakout session two includes:
  • “Thyroid: A General Overview,” Lynn Mack-Shipman, M.D., UNMC Department of Internal Medicine;
  • “Becoming a Woman: Our Changing Bodies,” Bridget Wieczorek, UNMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology; and
  • “Medical Management of Sexual Dysfunction,” Joel Bessmer, M.D., UNMC Department of Internal Medicine.

Information and activities will include balance testing, blood pressure, body composition, flexibility, lung disease screening, massage, and yoga demonstrations. Available information at booths will include Alzheimer’s disease, acupuncture, dental health, eating disorders, incontinence, osteoporosis, women’s addictions and relapse, and sleep disorders.
