Anderson Excavating employees have been installing the chain-linked fence between 40th and 41st Street for the first phase of demolition, which will begin Sept. 17.
Anderson also is doing asbestos abatement work in 10 of the 12 buildings slated for demolition.
Buildings to be razed are: Computing Services, Chemical and Radiation Safety (currently housed in Annex 1 and Annex 2), the PA program (Annex 1), five apartment complexes and three other residential structures.
Razing the area will make way for UNMC’s new Center for Health Science Education, the first true home for the College of Medicine. Completion of the $52.7 million facility will transform the northeast corner of 42nd and Emile Streets into the educational heart of campus.
To date, leadership gifts totaling $30 million have helped propel the project forward. These commitments include gifts by Allan and Dianne Lozier through The Lozier Foundation and by University Medical Associates (UMA), the UNMC physician group practice.
The second phase of demolition – scheduled for mid-October to mid-November — will run from 41st Street to 42nd Street and include four apartment buildings, two residential buildings and the Computing Services building. The third phase of demolition will remove 41st Street. The entire area should be leveled by Dec. 15.
Chemical and Radiation Safety soon will move into a renovated Shackleford Hall, while the Physician Assistant Program will relocate to Bennett Hall. Computing Services has been moving to the 4230 Building in phases, with the last group scheduled to be in their new offices by Sept. 23.
